Scrolling through Pinterest and Tumblr for hours and just thinking „How is it possible to achieve such good looking photos?“ is a daily task of mine and I guess some of you might have had the same situation once in a while.
Super cool settings, perfect photography skills and a closet full of the most chic and hip pieces seem to be the key to amazingly beautiful photos with tons of reposts and pins on Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram and all the other social platforms one knows.
To be honest, I didn’t think to be able to create such pictures by myself one day. I guess I was all about the feeling that it isn’t possible anyway to shoot tumblr-pics without a professional photographer (which I don’t have and actually don’t want to have, I like taking my pictures on my own).
BUT, I discovered some quite amazing steps to achieve a really tumblr-like look on my photos, which (I bet) some of you might find quite interesting, so I’m all about sharing them!
And the best thing about my 6 steps to a better photo is, that if you fail at completing one of them, it doesn’t matter if you accomplished the other ones well.
So here are those steps – in no particular order:
The key to good photography is always the equipment. The term „A good camera equals good photos“ is only partly true though. A good camera is the basis for taking good photos but if you don’t keep an eye on lightning, the setting and so on, a good camera doesn’t just throw an amazing photo at you. So, as I said earlier, if you don’t have a very good camera, just try to put even more work in the other steps down below and nobody will notice!
I personally use the Canon EOS 400D on the Av manual setting and the F-Stop turned down to 2.8, which is a great setting for achieving that blurred background and a sharp subject, if the subject isn’t too close to the camera. Paying attention to a good lense depending on what you want to shoot is also a good idea.
Here again, if you don’t have a perfect setting, if you’re camera is good and the other points are fulfilled, you don’t have to worry. But a good location is usually quite easily found. There are various places that compliment a tumblr-like photo, for example a beautiful landscape like woods or a field.
If you live in the city – perfect! Another good background for your pinterest-ready photo is for example a street full of cars, beautiful houses in the background or (very tumblr) a simple cross-walk.
A good outfit can probably save every mistaken photo, so this is a very important step here. Look up some cool outfits on pinterest (at least that’s what I do) or mix and match with the stuff you can find in your closet. A very good advice ist to colour match your pieces (more on fashion and colour matching here) or layer.
For my outfit I chose some washed out denim shorts, paired with my favourite Brandy Melville T-Shirt, which is basically the most comfortable and softest thing everrrr.
To give the look it’s tumblr-note I borrowed my sister’s white Adidas Superstars. As I always say: The shoes make the outfit!
Every look needs to be completed by some accessoires, if it’s simple jewellery or different things.
To keep the look simple I only chose some cute rings and my Daniel Wellington watch, I love so much and basically wear all the time.
If you want to make the photos even more hipster-style, just add a skateboard to your equipment and voilá – you look like a total tumblr-star!
Also other daily things can uplift your look and give the picture a more natural and out-of-daily-life tone. For example an ice-cream cone can totally do the trick. (Andy es, I purposely chose the blue ice-cream for the photos!)
A good light can enhance the beauty of your photos drastically as well as the other way round. Shooting in bad light can ruin a good photo immediately.
Make sure to always use daylight for your photos and minimize artificial light as much as possible (best is to not use any at all). A good time for taking photos is late afternoon (that’s when I took mine) or „magic hour“, which is about one hour prior sunset until sunset. (There’s a great app telling you when magic hour is, it’s called „Magic Hour“ – creative I know.)
If you like experimenting and have some advanced photography skills try shooting against the sun. Such photos can turn out really good, if you know how to take them properly.
Editing is a part of taking good photos but this part should definitely be the smallest of all. It’s very easy to exaggerate the editing and end up with a totally overedited photo that doesn’t look natural anymore at all. This is what you definitely do not want to achieve. Beautiful pictures are even better if they look totally natural, that’s why editing should be decreased to a minimum. Playing around with brightness and contrast should be the main part of editing but once again – even here you should be very careful and only adjust brightness and contrast a tiny bit if necessary. If you’re still not satisfied you can also adjust tone and warmth of your picture but stay away from premade filters and extreme editing.
The more natural – the more beautiful!
